YOUR PACKING LIST FOR AFRICA

Essentials

  • Hat

  • Sunglasses

  • Sun block (choose a factor as high as you can get +30)

  • Mosquito repellent (DEET is popular)

  • Torch

  • Torch batteries (and batteries for anything else that might need it)

  • Power adaptor (220V or 240V is the standard power supply in Africa)

  • Plug adaptors (bring a variety of plugs as there are many varieties: square pin, round pin, two prong etc)

Clothing

  • Comfortable walking boots - preferably ones that you've used before your trip

  • Jacket

  • Warm underclothes - for going out early in African winter mornings

  • Gloves & beanie hat - also for those early mornings

  • Long pants, zip off

Toilettries

  • toothbrush

  • toothpaste

  • your brand name toiletries that you can't do without!

  • water purification tablets (remember this is not necessary for South Africa as the water is safe to drink out of the taps)

  • hairdryer (often these still burn out despite using a power adaptor)

Medical

  • necessary vaccinations for the country you are visiting (see your nearest travel clinic)

  • Malaria tablets (remember you usually need to start the course BEFORE you leave home)

  • headache tablets

  • diarrhoea tablets

  • any personal medication

  • if you are bringing prescription medication, we recommend you also bring a copy of your doctor's prescription so as to avoid questions when you arrive

  • a useful precauation - document your medical problems, recent medical history and medications taken for your outfitter/PH. It will be of great help if medical treatment is necessary, but nothing is known about your particular problem and/or treatment.   

Guns

  • guns/bow - remember to bring the weapon you are most familiar with

  • ammunition (see calibre guidelines under ANIMALS section or chat to your PH)

  • gun case

  • gun licences OR proof of ownership of each firearm (obtainable from US Customs, for example)

  • export permits when you leave your home country

  • import permits - check with your PH/outfitter

  • knife

Trophies

  • any permits you require for the animals you want to shoot (Bontebok CITES permit for example)

  • trophy tags from your taxidermist

Documentation

  • passport

  • gun documentation (see above)

  • medical documentation (see above)

  • credit cards, travellers' cheques, cash

  • business cards

  • airtickets & your travel agent's contact details

  • travel insurance (usually arranged by your travel agent)

  • address & contact details for your outfitter/PH in Africa

Other Stuff...

  • binoculars / field glasses

  • camera & video camera (buy a charger to plug into your safari vehicle's cigarette lighter) 

  • cellphone with roaming capabilities (needs to work on GSM system)

  • books & other reading material

  • Accommodation bookings for before & end of safari
