ZAMBIA
- introduction
The popular catch phrase
for Zambia is "the real Africa" and it is certainly justified. Of all
southern African hunting countries, Zambia is one of the few that remains
truly African. In its own muddled way Zambia has maintained that feeling
of the unhurried safari in remote untouched concessions. The feeling of
being in Africa never leaves one, from the typically African urban cities
to the far flung corners of the reserves and concessions.
Zambia is a typical
third world African nation, heavily in debt, struggling to maintain
foreign debt payments and rife with all the common developing nation
ailments of extreme poverty, joblessness and mismanagement of
natural resources.
What
Zambia can proudly claim is political stability since its independence
from Britain in 1962 and this trend is set to continue under a new-found
democratic government since 1990. Never in Zambia's history has there been
any serious political and civil unrest as encountered in several of her
neighbours. However, there has been two years of political squabbling over
the allocation of hunting areas. GMA hunting remains closed and game farm
hunting has recently opened. It remains to be seen whether 2003 hunting
will take place!
It also holds some
Africa's last vast expanses of wilderness, uninhabited even by local
tribes, home to populations of unique game unrivalled in the rest of
Africa.
Today Zambian hunting is
excellent in some concessions and fair in most, offering reasonably priced
safaris for buffalo, lion and Leopard. Notable plains game species like
sable (the best on the continent), sitatunga, black and Kafue lechwe, puku
and Cookson's wildebeest make hunting here even more attractive. It is a
classical safari destination, taking one into wild inaccessible areas
traversed only by tsetse fly, game and local tribes.
