getting there - the easiest part
The best flight connections to Zambia are through Europe where British Airways, Air France and KLM have direct flights to Lusaka International Airport. There are daily flights to Lusaka and Ndola from Johannesburg serviced by South African Airways, Aero Zambia and Interair and Comair (British Airways).

There are various connecting flights from Europe through neighbouring African countries like Malawi, Tanzania, Botswana & Zimbabwe.

Air Malawi has a direct flight into Mfuwe (Luangwa Valley) from Lilongwe. Lilongwe is served by British Airways, KLM, Air France and South African Airways.

For convenience and choice, it is probably best to fly through Johannesburg as there is very little difference in actual flying time compared to transiting through Europe.

visas
You need a passport valid for at least 6 months after intended day of departure. In addition, you will need to produce an onward or return air ticket out of Zambia. You also need to produce a letter of support stating what your intended purpose is for visiting Zambia. If you are using a Zambian registered outfitter mention of their name and address and your safari dates should speed up the process.

Visas are required by most visitors, with Commonwealth Member States receiving a reprieve from the visa fees. If you are from any member country of the commonwealth, except for the United Kingdom (!), you do not need a visa. UK passport holders DO need a visa but this changes all the time so check before you leave. You can usually pay for it on arrival.

USA passport holders do need a visa prior to their arrival which should be applied for well in advance to the Zambian High Commission in Washington DC. If you use a travel agent experienced with African flights they are best equipped to handle your application.

Another thing to remember is the airport departure tax  which is US$20 for international visitors.

anything to declare?
The usual limitations on importing items into Zambia apply: NO MORE than 400 cigarettes or 500 grams of tobacco or cigars; about three bottles of wine; 2 bottles of spirits; about a dozen beers and any other goods not exceeding a total value of $150.

At best, customs officials are the usual nosey, hard-of-hearing type. Just keep your cool, smile and you will soon be on your way.

importing your guns
Thanks to an established and busy safari industry it is not too cumbersome getting your rifle into the country. You do need to have an IMPORT PERMIT for your rifles and ammunition before you arrive.

STEP-BY-STEP IMPORTING GUIDE

To import your rifles you have to make an application for a temporary import permit.

This is usually done on your behalf by the outfitter or PH you have booked your safari with.

They will need all your firearm particulars and personal details.

You will also be required to state the amount of ammunition you intend bringing into the country. You will pay for each round of ammunition (government fee) which was US$2 in 2004.

Handguns, black powder guns and bows are permitted into the country.

money
The unit of currency is the KWACHA, divided into 100 Ngwee. As the value of the Kwacha changes almost daily it is better to base your monetary thinking in dollars or sterling (many Zambians do).

Most of your safari costs are in Dollars anyway and the only times you are likely to need local currency is when you overnight at a city hotel on your way in or out of the country.

Travellers cheques are the safest and most convenient way to carry your money and there are numerous exchange bureaux. The most convenient currency is either Dollars or Sterling.

Credit cards are accepted at more and more establishments including restaurants, hotels and shops.

Take about 20% of your total budget in cash and the rest in TCs.

You can import any amount of foreign currency as long as it is declared upon your arrival.

safety
Zambian cities and towns often see criminal behaviour - petty crime is rife. That said - you don't visit Zambia to walk around the cities - you visit the bush! Also, be assured that you'll be safe with your PH who has a good feel for the areas that you hunt in.

If there is anything that we feel directly affects the hunter to Zambia, watch this space as we will be reporting it or you can get more information from our useful links.

Another thing to remember, while you are in Zambia you are subject to their laws and regulations. Penalties can include deportation or imprisonment - and you can't plead lack of knowledge!
